Everybody in New York should now move to Baldwin!

Baldwin among best places to live

Well, it's not Middleton, Wis. -- but Money magazine has named Baldwin one of the top places to live in the country.

The magazine calls Baldwin "a haven for families" and says it "draws a diverse population who move to the town for its schools, and its proximity to healthy job markets and beaches." It comes in 25th out of 100 "Best Places to Live" and is the only Long Island community to make the annual list.

Money magazine said the South Shore community has a population of 23,100, a 2006 median home price of $432,635 and average property taxes in 2005 of $6,625. It cites a median household income of $90,316. Baldwin also boasts a relatively short -- 31-minute -- commute to Manhattan.

This year, the magazine focused on smaller towns with a population of between 7,500 and 50,000. Left out were retirement communities and those with high crime rates, low school test scores, large swings in population, large projected job losses or lack of access to airports or teaching hospitals, according to its Web site. It then ranked the communities based on quality-of-life issues such as job availability, housing costs and educational value.

"It's wonderful recognition for a great place to live," said Nassau Legis. Joseph Scannell (D-Baldwin), a lifelong resident. "We have wonderful schools, close proximity to the beaches and newly refurbished ponds."

Middleton, Wis., was named the top place to live in the country. Money magazine cited its "small-town charm and booming economy," as well as its proximity to the state capital, Madison, but also told of its tough winters.
